In North Korea, the Five Major Ideological Education (5대교양) is a term used to refer to the five fundamental elements emphasized in ideological education during the era of Kim Jong-un. Originally, the term included Greatness Education, Kim Jong-Il Patriotism Education, Belief Cultivation, Anti-imperialist Class Education, and Moral Education. However, after the 8th Party Congress, the term was revised to include Revolutionary Tradition, Loyalty Education, Patriotism Education, Anti-imperialist Class Education, and Moral Education.
The term "Five Major Ideological Education" was introduced in 2014 to refer to the emphasis that the Kim Jong-un regime places on ideological education. During a visit to the 189th Navy Unit in December 2014, Kim Jong-un instructed the strengthening of the 5 Major Ideological Education, including Greatness Education, Kim Jong-Il Patriotism Education, Belief Cultivation, Anti-imperialist Class Education, and Moral Education. Following the 8th Party Congress in 2021, the Rules of the Workers' Party of Korea were revised to include Revolutionary Tradition, Loyalty Education, Patriotism Education, Anti-imperialist Class Education, and Moral Education as the Five Major Ideological Education.
The emergence of new leadership aims to create a socially transformed atmosphere and induce regime cohesion. The Kim Jong-un regime adopts the authority and legitimacy of the previous generation, such as Greatness Education and Kim Jong-Il Patriotism Education, and intensifies hostility towards external forces through Anti-imperialist Class Education. Additionally, it emphasizes belief in the regime and reconstructs a paternalistic order, thereby continuously attempting to strengthen regime cohesion. During the 8th Party Congress held in 2021, which coincided with the 10th anniversary of the Kim Jong-un regime, revisions were made to the education list. Specifically, three of the previous Five Major Ideological Education - Greatness Education, Kim Jong-Il Patriotism Education, and Belief Cultivation - were replaced by Revolutionary Tradition, Loyalty Education, and Patriotism Education. However, the Anti-imperialist Class Education and Moral Education remained intact. Therefore, the Five Major Ideological Education can be viewed as a significant component of the Kim Jong-un regime's justification system.
