Yellow Wind is a term used in North Korea to refer to a vulgar and decadent trend, usually referred to as "Yellow Wind of Capitalism." North Korean media often uses this term when urging vigilance against the infiltration of imperialist thought and culture and capitalist culture.
North Korea guards against "anti-social phenomena" that have entered the lives of North Korean residents due to the expansion of market activities since the economic difficulties of the 1990s. North Korea guards against "anti-social elements" which include:
1. Deviant behavior that goes against collective socialist norms and values, such as improper dress, superstitious beliefs, and extramarital affairs;
2. Illegal activities resulting from economic difficulties, including illicit cultivation and bribe-taking;
3. Criminal activities such as smuggling, gambling, and drugs;
4. Dissident and anti-social behaviors such as watching South Korean videos.
North Korea claims that Yellow Wind "paralyzes the class consciousness of the people," "undermines the nation's unique traditions and customs," and "contaminates decadent behavior". In response, North Korea has been increasing censorship to control these anti-social elements, as they fear the spread of such phenomena could threaten the regime and cause changes in residents' consciousness, leading to social division. North Korea claims that the fall of socialist countries in Eastern Europe was caused by the influence of capitalist culture. They argue that "Yellow Wind," which they see as a cultural invasion by imperialists, poses a greater threat to countries building socialism than an atomic bomb. In other words, Yellow Wind, means "freedom" and "democracy."
To crack down on and block such Yellow Wind, North Korea organizes "anti-social groups" and conducts periodic inspections and investigations, imposing various punishments depending on the seriousness of the matter.
